I love tie dye, and lately I've been seeing tie dye clothing in some high street stores and I thought instead of paying around £10-£20 for a tie dyed t-shirt, why not try and tie dye one myself!
Heres mine, it's far from perfect, but costs a fraction and you can gain satifaction from creating something yourself.
To achieve this I purchased;
- 1x White cotton t-shirt (Amazon)
- 1x Dylon "Flamingo Pink" Fabric dye (Amazon)
- 250g of salt (Supermarket!)
(This cost me under £5!)
You will need;
- Water
- Bucket
(Something to put the dye in, could use sink/bath.)
- Various things to create the design
(Hair/elastic bands, coins, clips etc.)
This process is really simple, and not too messy, however, I suggest you may want to wear old clothes and gloves just in case! (I didn't and had pink hands for a while)
You can try this on t-shirts, leggings, bags, cushion covers, however you may want to try a small section in the dye first to test that it will take it.
1.) Take you item of clothing and gather objects to create your desired pattern, I wanted to create the simple circles, so at first I really just experimented and found that hairbands and coins were really successful.
I tried placing the coin under the fabric and gather the fabric around it and tie a band to secure it (this creates a circle), I also added a band further down to secure the creased fabric as creating creases is great as the dye cannot get into creases or under the bands this creates the tie dye effect.
Also try just grabbing and scrunching the fabric and securing it with a band, this creates a free, patchy pattern that I think is really effective.
I think with tie dye it is all about experimenting with lots of different objects and things you find around, a great idea is to perhaps practice on something first, (I did this) you will not have to buy any extra dye, the dye will last for quite a few items, however the first item will probably turn out the darkest.
2.) Prepare the dye, this is when you will need a bucket, your packet of dye, water and salt. To create the dye just follow the instructions on the back of the packet, I thought they were clear and easy, but if you have any questions comment below, I'm happy to help how I can.
3.) After 45 minutes in the dye, and regular stirring, take out your item of clothing (this bit may be messy, so I did this over the bath), then rinse out the dye, remove all the bands and bits you used, and continue rinsing out the dye until the water draining off it, is clear. Squeeze out the water and hang up to dry! Once dried you have got yourself a tie dyed piece of clothing you created, yay!
I would also suggest washing the piece of clothing separately for a few washes just to get all the dye out.
Any questions, or tips please feel free to comment!
Thank you for reading,
Happy tie dying.
